Saskatoon City Budget & Policy Update

We have all heard and read about the budget crisis at the City of Saskatoon. SOS Trees Coalition has a number of policy positions. We will be addressing the following positions through our Councillor coffees, presentation at council and letter writing:

  • The erosion of Saskatoon's urban forest
  • Protecting significant trees on private property through a tax incentive process
  • Increasing the number of trees on boulevards and front yards
  • Increasing public understanding of the values and care of trees within a prairie environment
  • Reducing the impact of insect and disease on Saskatoon's trees due to climate change

Dutch Elm Disease is spreading

July 2023. In previous years Dutch Elm Disease was found in the SW corner of the City. This year it has been found in Sutherland and Pleasant Hill neighbourhoods. The city has stepped up their surveillance resulting in additional cases in Sutherland. In the recent cases found in a Sutherland/Forest Grove shelterbelt and due to the proximity of the trees and the potential that root grafting would spread the disease approximately 30 neighbouring trees were removed.

Bequest to SOS Trees

  • Joan Browne, a member of SOS Elms during its earlier days, passed away in December 2017 at the age of 95. Joan's father Alfred Browne became Saskatoon's first Parks Superintendent in 1911 and tirelessly worked to establish Saskatoon's urban forest for the next 44 years. We wish to gratefully acknowledge her generous bequest to our organization.
